Red diesel campaign hits European Parliament
A UK Independence Party MEP has brought red diesel and MBM's campaign to save the low-duty fuel to the centre of European politics.

In a 60-second speech to the European Parliament on 22 March, Gerard Batten said: "All British MEPs should lobby the Minister responsible to ensure that the derogation continues. They should also join the campaign to save the derogation started by Motor Boats Monthly magazine."

MBM editor Simon Collis said: "There can't be too many magazines who can claim being mentioned in the European Parliament.

"This is a signal to up the tempo of the campaign."

Look out for the May issue of MBM (on sale 13 April) to find out how to contact your local MEP and support the campaign.

The full text of the speech is printed below.

"Britain currently enjoys a tax derogation on red diesel that applies to leisure boating. The derogation expires in December 2006. If the derogation is not extended the price of fuel for motor boats could treble.

If this happens there will be an inevitable decline in leisure boating. The Exchequer will receive less revenue, not more; and economic damage will be done to local communities.

The continuation of the derogation is a matter between the Council and the Commission, but tax policy should be the sole prerogative of sovereign, national governments.

All British MEPs should lobby the Minister responsible to ensure that the derogation continues. They should also join the campaign to save the derogation started by Motor Boats Monthly magazine. I will be pleased to supply them with details of how to do so."
