Quicksilver passes milestone in record attempt
Nigel Macknight's British attempt to break the world water speed record has passed a major milestone. The Rolls-Royce Spey turbofan engine that will power his boat 'Quicksilver' was run at 60-percent RPM, the highest speed setting so far achieved.
Quicksilver's engine is the most powerful ever used in the long history of the world water speed record, and will mark the first-ever use of a turbofan engine in such a challenge. The record is currently held by Australia's Ken Warby and stands at 317.60 mph (511.11 kph).
Nigel Macknight, Quicksilver's driver, hopes to make his first attempt to break the record on Coniston Water sometime between January and March next year.
