Scottish whistling ban
Whistling has been banned in a Scottish town in an attempt to ensure good weather for its boating festival later this month. Organisers of the Portsoy Scottish Traditional Boat Festival say the tongue-in-cheek move has been in response to poor weather at last year's event.
Seafarers believed that whistling was a form of mocking King Neptune, who would retaliate by sending storms to punish them. The ban is, of course, unenforceable, but the organisers have asked boat owners, crews, and Portsoy's residents to sing or hum instead of whistling!
